Mark Mainiero, Vice President of UPR Products, recently initiated a project to create a unique Mustang for weekend enjoyment. While respecting modern vehicle advancements, Mainiero holds a particular appreciation for the classic Fox Body Mustang. An opportunity arose when a former customer offered for sale a 1984 Mustang GT. This specific vehicle had previously received performance upgrades, including TFS cylinder heads and an enhanced camshaft, from UPR (then operating as SuperStang) in 1992. Upon inspection, the car was found to be in exceptional condition with only 74,000 original miles. Mark purchased the vehicle on the spot.
Subsequently, UPR Products developed a plan to perform a Coyote swap. Mark and his son Joe selected a new Gen 3 Coyote engine, a 10R80 automatic transmission, and a Ford Performance control pack as the optimal powertrain configuration. This combination best offered the refined drivability and performance characteristics of a contemporary 435 horsepower Mustang GT with the classic looks of a Fox body Mustang. However, due to the Fox Body platform being approximately 1,000 pounds lighter than its S550 descendant, the swapped vehicle is anticipated to exhibit significantly enhanced acceleration. This significant power-to-weight advantage encapsulates the appeal of the popular Coyote-swapped Fox Body trend: UPR's 1984 Mustang GT effectively combines modern Mustang GT performance with a lighter, classic Fox Body chassis.
For this Coyote Swap Project, UPR Products entrusted the 1984 Mustang to Lujan Motorsports in Miami. Recognized for his expertise in high-quality, turnkey Coyote-swapped Fox Body Mustangs, Willie Lujan of Lujan Motorsports installed the selected Gen 3 Coyote crate engine with a 1320 Junkie ported intake, the 10R80 transmission, and the Ford Performance control pack. The installation also incorporated several specialized Coyote swap components sourced from Power By The Hour. Ultimate Headers supplied the full-length exhaust headers, while Lujan Motorsports fabricated the remainder of the custom exhaust system, featuring full tailpipes that exit discreetly beneath the rear bumper.
Lujan Motorsports also installed a complete UPR Pro Street suspension system, a UPR tubular K-member kit, Viking Performance coilover shocks paired with UPR billet caster/camber plates, and a high-performance Baer disc brake system on all four corners. These UPR suspension components, along with many other parts utilized in this build, are readily available from UPR Products for enthusiasts undertaking similar projects. A polished set of custom 17-inch Billet Specialties wheels was chosen for its good looks and light weight.
